Message from the Tournament Director:
Dear Coaches:
The Pennsbury Tournament is proud to announce that this year we will be celebrating our 30th Anniversary Tournament on June 18-20, 2010. The Pennsbury Tournament has grown to become one of the largest college recruiting tournaments on the East Coast and for the past 30 years we have been pleased to have had participants from all over the United States and Canada.
The Pennsbury Tournament was an idea conceived by Art Coleman that began with just 8 teams in 1980. Art Coleman, who was the Pennsbury Gems coach at the time, continued to develop and work the tournament over 21 years helping to grow the number of teams participating as the Pennsbury organization grew and as the number of new fields became available. Prior to Art's untimely passing away in October of 2001 the tournament had grown to 64 teams and in addition had the NFCA holding its administered recruiting camp the day before. Les Venella and Joe Parell assumed the task of administering the tournament after Art’s death and continue to run it with the same goal; create a large venue that college coaches could attend, observe and recruit players from all over the United States and Canada.
For this, our 30th anniversary, we believe we have made an improvement to the tournament once again. We have decided to format the teams into 8 brackets of 8 teams at the Pennsbury main campus. Those 64 teams will play 4 pool games; the top 6 teams in each bracket will be seeded for a single elimination tournament. The 2 teams that finish 7th and 8th in the bracket will play their 5th game on Saturday afternoon. We will continue to allow first time participants to Pennsbury to play at the Newtown complex and will expand that venue from 18 to 24 teams, each playing 5 games weather permitting, on Friday and Saturday only. Joe and I are excited about this new design and feel it will allow the teams, after pool play and seeding, to aggressively compete towards winning a bracket championship.
We accept applications for committee review from September 15th to December 1st every year from the teams that did not play in Pennsbury the year before. We accept approximately 40 of the 90 teams through the early application process. This early acceptance process is only offered to returning teams and upon committee review, are then selected to participate.
